WebOct 29, 2024 · The P-51D uses a Packard V-1650-7 liquid cooled supercharged V-12 engine. During the design phase the North American P-51 was called the NA-73X. The initial design followed conventional practices of the time but featured two new concepts. The first was a laminar flow airfoil wing design that had very low drag at very high speeds. The Meredith effect is a phenomenon whereby the aerodynamic drag produced by a cooling radiator may be offset by careful design of the cooling duct such that useful thrust is produced by the expansion of the hot air in the duct. The effect was discovered in the 1930s and became more important as the speeds of piston-engined aircraft increased over the next decade.

WebSmaller radiators may cost less but will consume more power; hence we have to optimize the design. Cost of radiators, heat transferred per unit area by radiator varies according to size, capacity and materials used for radiator and fins.
